Stage Director

Kirsten Z Cairns’ extensive directing work includes theatre, opera and shows for children. She is experienced in working with both students and professionals, and is able to nurture all performers to bring out their best, drawing from her studies in literature, theatre, music and teaching. (Her students have gone on to success all over the world, and include a recent winner of the Metropolitan Opera’s prestigious National Council Auditions.) Reviewers have called Kirsten’s work, ‘Astounding, phenomenal, superb,’ and ‘so good, you want to see it again, right away’.
A trained dancer, Kirsten has also worked as choreographer for opera productions. Her current positions include Resident Director for Intermezzo Chamber Opera New England. For details for her upcoming productions, please visit her facebook page.
Kirsten has been working in professional theatre since she was 16, when she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Props team at the Barbican Centre in London. Following studies at Durham University, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the New England Conservatory, Kirsten was hired by The Boston Conservatory, where she held the position of Director of Opera Studies. Having received her greencard for ‘Extraordinary Ability’ (meaning that she is in the top 1% in her field), Kirsten left the Conservatory in August 2011, to work as a freelance director.
